recent happenings in Melbourne

So I continue to work like a crazy person, but mostly at night, so I've had my days free to do some fun stuff.

Last week I caught up with a fellow traveller, Marlies, a Dutch girl I met in the Northern Territory. She's been in Melbourne for a couple of weeks, staying with a friend, so we met in neutral territory and had breakfast in Richmond, at the Sass Cafe:

After breakfast we went across the road to Cotton On and bought some cheap clothes. Yay!

Tuesday last week marked my 6 month anniversary in Australia, so fellow American Courtney and I went out to celebrate. We started at Andrew's Hamburgers, in Albert Park, which is supposed to be the best burgers in Melbourne.

I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, and Courtney went full on with "the lot" which involves the usual hamburger suspects plus egg and bacon. Some places include beetroot with "the lot" but not Andrew's.

yum!

After lunch, we decided to head into the city for a movie. I took a picture of the tram and tram stop, for those of you curious:

At the movies (we saw Inception, which was great), Courtney tried her first Choc-top, an Australian movie-going tradition:
who doesn't love ice cream at the movies?

Then yesterday, my lovely housemate Morgan and I made a day of it in Fitzroy, an uber-trendy suburb north of the city. We first went and got $20 haircuts at the Biba Academy - what a bargain!

We went to breakfast at the Atomica Cafe, which was delicious, but both of us wished our coffees had been hotter. We asked our waitress to point us towards a movie theatre (or cinema!), and she gave us some vague directions and off we went. We stopped along the way at a post office because I wanted to mail a postcard. It was kind of musty smelling and weird, so Morgan waited outside, a decision she may have regretted. While standing in line, I heard some sort of crazy commotion outside, and knew Morgan had to be involved (this always happens to her). When I finished buying my stamp, I went outside and apparently a woman with Tourettes had accosted Morgan and called her a bunch of very foul names. Oh, Melbourne! You are a crazy place!

We found Cinema Nova on Lygon Street in Carlton, the Italian district. Tuesday is usually cheap movie day in Melbourne, but not at Cinema Nova, so we paid $18 to see Toy Story 3. But we had the theatre to ourselves, Morgan had a beer, and the seats were really big and nice - like armchairs! Maybe I'll go back on cheap Monday!

After the movie we wandered down Lygon Street looking for a place to get a drink and a snack, but made it all the way into the city before ending up at Mr Tulk, which is the cafe attached to the State Library of Victoria.

I guess the R is missing!

our drinks - Coopers Original Pale Ale!

And that's the roundup! Have some visitors this weekend, and next weekend is Jaki's birthday, so there should be some fun pictures. See you then!
